What is a spacebar test?

A spacebar test measures how fast you can tap the spacebar, counted as presses per second. It works exactly like a clicks-per-second test, except the input is your keyboard's biggest key instead of a mouse button. You pick a duration, press space as quickly as you can until the timer runs out, and the spacebar counter divides your total presses by the number of seconds to give you a single speed score.

Because the spacebar is pressed with the thumb or a flat finger rather than a fine fingertip, it rewards a slightly different rhythm than mouse clicking — which is why a lot of players like to benchmark both. It's a quick, honest way to see how fast your press hand really is.

How the spacebar counter works

Everything runs in your browser, so there's nothing to install. To take the test:

  1. Pick a duration. Use the selector above to choose a test length — 10 seconds is the default and the most common benchmark.
  2. Press space to start. The first spacebar press kicks off the countdown, then a live counter shows your presses and current speed while the timer ticks down. Holding the key down does nothing — only real, separate presses count.
  3. See your speed and rank. When time's up, you get your presses per second and the rank tier it earns on its own spacebar scale. On a phone or tablet there's no spacebar, so the pad simply takes taps instead.

What's a good spacebar speed?

Spacebar speed lands in a similar range to mouse CPS, and for many people it's a touch higher because a flat thumb or finger can bounce off a big key very quickly. Most people press somewhere around 6–8 presses per second comfortably. Anything consistently above 8 is fast, and players who practise rhythmic spacebar techniques can push past 10 over a short burst.

As with clicking, your sustained rate drops the longer the test runs — a one or two second burst will always look faster than a steady minute. Your result maps to a spacebar-specific rank scale, built for presses rather than clicks, so you're only ever measured against other spacebar runs:

  • FBeginner0–4 presses/sec
  • DCasual5+ presses/sec
  • CSkilled7+ presses/sec
  • BExpert9+ presses/sec
  • AMaster11+ presses/sec
  • SPro13+ presses/sec
  • S+Legend16+ presses/sec

Why gamers train spacebar speed

Spacebar speed isn't just a curiosity — in a lot of games the spacebar is doing real work. In Minecraft, fast spacebar presses power techniques like bridging and jump resets, where rapid, well-timed jumps directly affect how you move and fight. In shooters and platformers, jump and dash are often bound to space, so a faster, more consistent press helps with bunny-hopping and tight movement combos.

Rhythm games lean on it too: holding tempo with quick, even spacebar taps is its own skill, and a counter is a simple way to measure whether your timing is steady or ragged. Training the press in isolation makes all of those easier under pressure.

Tips to improve your spacebar speed

  • Find your contact point. Most fast pressers use the side of the thumb or a flat finger near the centre of the key. Experiment until the bar springs back fastest for you.
  • Stay loose. Tension kills speed. Keep your wrist relaxed and let the key's own rebound do part of the work instead of mashing.
  • Aim for an even rhythm. A steady pace you can hold beats a fast start that fades — especially on the longer durations.
  • Warm up. Your second or third run is usually your best, so take a couple of practice goes before chasing a record.
