What is a double-click test?
A double-click test checks whether your mouse registers one physical click as two. Every press runs through a tiny mechanical switch, and as that switch wears it can "bounce" — sending two signals from a single press. This tool times the gap between consecutive clicks so you can see that bounce as a hard number instead of guessing at it. How to use it

What your results mean
Three bands, based on the gap between two consecutive clicks:
- Under 15ms — double-fire. No human finger moves that fast. The switch is chattering and registering one press as two. It's hardware, not cheating, and not something you "did wrong" — a worn or low-debounce switch simply leaks an extra signal.
- 15–50ms — borderline. Could be genuinely fast clicking — butterfly and drag clickers pass through here — or a switch starting to wear. Not a problem on its own, but worth keeping an eye on if it climbs.
- Over 50ms — clean. Each click is landing as its own deliberate press, which is exactly what you want. Your switches are separating presses the way they're supposed to.
Here's the honest part: a double-firing switch is great for padding a CPS counter and miserable in an actual fight — dropped blocks, accidental item drops, misfired hits. It also has nothing to do with skill or cheating. Raw clicking speed isn't cheating, and neither is a chattering switch; it's just hardware behaving badly. Drag clicking leans on exactly this kind of controlled bounce, which is why it's so hard on your mouse over time.
Why switches start chattering
Inside almost every mouse button is a small mechanical switch with a springy metal leaf that slaps against a fixed contact. A clean press should close that circuit once. Three things gradually stop it doing so:
- Contact oxidation. The mating surfaces build up a thin film of tarnish and airborne grime. The film raises resistance right at the moment of contact, so the signal flickers on and off across a press instead of settling cleanly. This is the most common cause on a mouse that used to be fine, and it's why a switch can misbehave in humid weather and behave in dry weather.
- Spring fatigue. That leaf is being bent millions of times. As it loses tension it stops damping its own rebound, so after the initial contact it bounces back and re-touches. Weaker spring, longer bounce, more chances the firmware reads two presses.
- Wear cycles. Switches are rated in clicks — commonly 20, 50, or 80 million. That figure is a statistical average under gentle lab conditions, not a guarantee, and rapid clicking techniques burn through it far faster than ordinary desktop use. A heavy clicker can reach a 20M rating in a couple of years.
Firmware is supposed to absorb all of this. Every mouse applies a debounce window — a few milliseconds after a press during which further transitions are ignored. Chatter becomes visible to you when the switch's bounce grows longer than the window its firmware allows. That's why the fault appears gradually: the bounce creeps up until it crosses the threshold, then the mouse starts double-firing on maybe one press in fifty, then one in ten.
Reading your own numbers properly
A single low gap proves very little on its own. Chatter is intermittent by nature, and one reading of 9ms in a run of thirty clicks is a different story from nine readings of 9ms. Give yourself a real sample: click each button thirty or so times, note the lowest handful of gaps, and look at how often the sub-15ms band shows up rather than whether it shows up at all.
The most useful thing this tool gives you is a built-in control. Test both buttons. Switches wear independently, so your right button is effectively a healthy reference sample from the same mouse, the same desk and the same hand. A left button posting repeated sub-15ms gaps while the right one never drops below 60ms is about as clear a hardware verdict as you can get without opening the case.
Be honest about your own technique too. If you butterfly or drag click, you are deliberately producing very fast paired inputs, and the borderline band will light up for entirely legitimate reasons. Try a slow, deliberate one-press-per-second rhythm: at that pace any gap under 15ms is the switch, not you, because no finger produces a second press that fast by accident.
What to do if it's double-firing
There are four realistic routes, roughly in order of effort. Debounce software raises the ignore window in software and is the quickest option, though it adds a little input latency and treats the symptom rather than the cause. Cleaning the switch contacts with isopropyl alcohol often buys back months and costs nothing but patience. Replacing the switch is the permanent fix if you can solder. And if the mouse is still in warranty, stop there and claim — chatter is a recognised manufacturing fault, not user damage, and opening the case yourself will void the claim.

Frequently asked questions
Does double-clicking mean my mouse is dying?
It means one switch is worn, which is not the same as the whole mouse being finished. The sensor, cable, feet and every other switch are usually fine. A single chattering button is a repairable fault, and plenty of mice go on for years after a clean or a switch swap.
Can software fix it permanently?
Not permanently, no. Debounce software widens the window in which a second signal is ignored, which hides the symptom effectively — but the switch keeps degrading underneath, and you eventually have to widen the window so far that real fast clicks get swallowed too. Treat it as a stopgap that buys you time, not a cure.
Why does only one button double-click?
Because you don't use them equally. The left button typically absorbs the large majority of clicks in both desktop work and gaming, so it reaches its wear rating years ahead of the right. Independent switches wear independently — that asymmetry is exactly what makes the right button such a useful control when you test.
Does fast clicking cause it?
It accelerates it rather than causing it. Every switch has a finite number of cycles in it, and techniques that multiply your clicks per second spend those cycles faster. Drag clicking is the harshest case, since it works by deliberately provoking the same rapid contact bounce that chatter is made of.
Is a double-clicking mouse cheating?
No, but it will make your scores meaningless and can get you flagged. Extra clicks you didn't make inflate a CPS result, and anti-cheat systems look for click patterns too regular or too fast to be human.
